I was just in the middle of writing a more lengthy post about real-time search, when someone sent me a link to this video. For those of us whose love affair with the British mains plug never really got off the ground – and let's face it, that's pretty much all of us – this is a brilliant idea that a) I can't believe anyone hasn't thought of already, and b) I hope makes the inventor a much-deserved pile of cash. Behold:

Fantastic! I'm currently visiting in the UK and was just thinking last night what a bloody inconvenient plug you people use. What a brilliant solution!

You don't really know how bloody inconvenient it is until you've stood on one in your bare feet.

Want! That bloody plug causes me no end of trouble (I travel around a huge amount with laptop, mains adaptor, powered usb hub and usb charger). These brilliant plugs, combined with that almost-as-clever '3-way adaptor', would make life a little bit nicer.

Top idea, can't wait to see this in the stores.

It's very clever, but I don't have a problem generally with our plugs. They have a nice solid feel, especially compared to US plugs which have the feel of something your dad would rig up if he needed to use electricity but didn't have a plug.

I know what you mean. But surely this provides the solidness without the bulk?
When can I get one?

waaaaaaant.

A few years ago I was carrying my laptop with the plug in my manbag, and the prongs worked their way between the halves of the folded laptop and busted my screen. Cost £££hundreds to replace. So yeah. Needed. Hope it goes into production soon.
